Book One of the Purrennium Trilogy

There once was a cat named Fluffington.

  Actually, his REAL name was:

“Sir Lord Alfred Fluffington the Third.”

His last name was “Kitty,” like all the kitties in the world.

Fluffington was different from other cats. He always had been, for one simple reason:

He didn’t know how to purr.

He never purred. Not when he was happy.

  Not when he was full.

  Not when he was excited.

Not even when he was by the pool.

All the other cats thought Fluffington was a strange kitty, because they knew how to purr, and he didn’t.

That was why he didn’t have very many friends—well, any friends.

Other cats were afraid of him, because the one thing he was good at—

  Was HISSING, and howling!

If anyone ever tried to pet him, he would start to howl:

“Mrrrrrraaaaawwwwooooowwww,” he would say, and if they kept trying . . .

  “Mrrrrrraaaaawwwwooooowwww!” a little louder this time . . . and if they still didn’t stop . . . .

  MRRRRAAAAWWWOOOOOOWWWW! HISS! HISS!

Then he would scratch them, and run away.

After a while, nobody even tried to pet Fluffington anymore.

That made him sad, because he actually LIKED to be petted.

He just didn’t want anyone to know it.

  Fluffington’s human was named Sarah.

Sarah always took good care of him, and she had the scratches to prove it.

She had found him in the animal shelter when he was a tiny, tiny kitty.

She told her mom “I want that one!”

  Because he was soooooo cute.

That was before everyone found out that he was a special kitty.

That didn’t know how to purr.

And that made his human sad.

Because she loved him very much.

“Why can’t you purr like other kitties?” she would ask.

  He didn’t answer her.

  Because cats can’t talk, silly!

He would just look at her sad little face.

And sometimes he would even make a little kitty smile.

“I wish I knew how to purr,” he would think to himself.

“Because I love my human very much.”

Sarah even asked her mom to take Fluffington to the cat doctor.

Her mom called him a “veterarian,” but Sarah couldn’t pronounce that very well.

“Cat doctor will do!” he said. “What seems to be the trouble?”

“I think my kitty is sick,” said Sarah. “His purr box is broken.”

“Can you give him a new one?”

“Hmmmmm . . .” said the cat doctor.

“Hmmmmm . . .” he said again, as he stroked his chin.

“Does Fluffington EVER purr?” he said.

“Never. Not even with a full tummy, on a warm lap,” said Sarah.

“Hmmmmm . . .” said the cat doctor, again.

Sarah was getting tired of hearing him say that.

She was starting to think that “Hmmmmm” meant “I don’t know” in doctor talk.

“Fluffington isn’t sick,” said the cat doctor. “So it must be something inside his head.”

“I will give you a subscription to another doctor,” he said.

“One who specializes in head medicine.”

“Maybe he just can’t BE fixed,” said Sarah’s mom. “Maybe we should look for another kitty for you.”

“NO!” said Sarah. “Fluffington WILL learn how to purr, even if I have to teach him myself!”

Sarah held Fluffington tightly as her mom and the cat doctor whispered to each other.

  She look in Fluffington’s eyes.

“Don’t worry, little Fluff. We will learn how to purr . . . together.”

Will Fluffington ever learn how to purr?
